Diablo Dam Good Tour
Located just 3 hours northeast of Seattle, rugged alpine beauty and the power of human engineering await you at Seattle City Light's company town of Newhalem, in the heart of the North Cascade Mountains. The adventure begins upon arrival at the Skagit Information Center, located 130 miles northeast of Seattle in Newhalem, which is just off picturesque Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway.
Your first stop is at the Skagit General Store in Newhalem, where you will have the chance to make a quick stop and sample their world-renown fudge. Then, you will be joined by a step-on guide who will provide a historical and geological narration about the area, before arriving at Diablo Lake for the boat tour. Your motor coach will take you across the very top of Diablo Dam, built in the 1930s and then you will embark in the Diablo Lake Adventure tour, which includes a 1 hour escorted boat excursion of the rugged and narrow Diablo Lake Canyon. You'll ply the turquoise green waters of Diablo Lake aboard the Alice Ross III, surrounded by the jagged, snowcapped peaks of the North Cascades.
After the boat ride, you will have a chance to walk across the top of Diablo Dam, and catch amazing views of the Cascade Mountains and surrounding lakes for a fantastic photo opportunity. Then, it's on to the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center, located in Newhalem. The visitor center has a theater featuring large format slide program and video presentation about the area, as well as interactive maps, interpretive trails for self-guided hikes, restrooms, and, of course, it presents an opportunity to buy souvenirs and gifts. A ranger-led walking tour may also be available upon request.
Next, is a short stop at Cascadian Farm, just off Highway 20. Located in Rockport, Cascadian Farm began growing organic produce in 1972, and has become a leading grower, marketer, and distributor or a wide-range of delicious organic products ranging from fruits to breakfast cereal; some of which are available that are available for visitors to purchase and sample onsite.
This adventure truly showcases the alpine grandeur to be found in the rugged North Cascades as you travel along Highway 20 and Diablo Lake, and you will fast find why people call this area the American Alps. Your tour includes round-trip motor coach transportation, a continental breakfast, box lunch, tour escort, step-on guide, Diablo Lake Adventure boat tour, and scenic stops en-route, including the North Cascades Park Visitor Center and Cascadian Farm.
